Recent Security Issues
« on: February 02, 2012, 12:53:00 PM »
As of late, the last month or so, servers across the country have been getting attacked by a source as of yet, undefined. Even the OS engineers don't have this one pinned down yet.
I have been monitoring all intrusions attempted through the server. it would be wise for each of you to keep an eye on your Access and Error logs, for any anomalies.
It appears to me, after studying these attacks, that they are largely focused on outdated software, which have security vulnerabilities.
MAKE SURE, your software used for your website is the latest available. When these software developers release a new version, 9 times out of 10 it is because of a security flaw in their system they have found.
One good way to make a quick check to see if your files have been tampered with. If you see a file with a date next to it, that corresponds with the last time the file was changed. If all your files have the same date, except for one,2 or more, check those files thoroughly against a fresh file. If possible, and you are in doubt, replace that file with a fresh one.
Once the attack starts, the virus will start to infect your files, AND, look for email user names and passwords. so it is important that everyone change their cPanel password, which also changes your FTP password at the same time. server passwords have already been taken care of, and we are at the highest level of security we can be.
If it makes you feel safer, please feel free to change email password as well. Make sure you save all this new information.
any cPanel passwords that are changed, must be sent to me along with the user name and domain.
You can send me a PM here on the site, but an email would probably be safer. Send to:  email me
Please post any questions below.
Thanks,
Steve
